OK, I think we all know I'll probably never get around to finishing my Cinderella recap, since it's been almost a month since the pageant ended. So, here's the short version: I won 3 categories; Photogenic, Beauty, and Talent (although they didn't actually give an award for talent, Judy just told me later that I'd scored highest in it.) Although I didn't get the overall high score, in Cinderella the rule is that as long as you win talent, beauty, or photogenic you can still advance to nationals. So, that means I'm going to Vegas in July and I have a lot to do before then, which I've been trying to take care of since the pageant ended. I've already faxed my letter of intent to them (along with my $200 deposit) now we're trying to book a flight and figure out which room plan we want, so we need to figure out who all is going. I'm also doing a complete wardrobe overhaul. According to the judges comments, I need a gown that jumps out more on stage, so Judy and I have been looking at different styles and colors on line. Well, I found the gown of my dreams, now the only thing standing in my way is the $800 it's gona cost to order it. Anyone know a place where I can sell my eggs on the internet? hahaha! (I'm serious, though!)
Well, now that all that's out of the way, if you're still reading I have another story that starts out all happy but has a sad ending. Therefore, if you are sensitive or an animal lover (as I am myself) read no further!!
Thursday afternoon, I was playing out back with Kirby when she kept running over to this particular spot in the backyard and digging in the ground. I'd seen her do that a couple weeks ago. It looked like a snake hole or something, and I didn't think much of it. Well, that day she kept stuffing her nose in it and coming up with some kind of hair or fur. Turns out, it was rabbit fur, and that hole was a nest full of baby bunnies! They were soooooo cute! They weren't newborns, so they could jump and probably survive on their own by now (I hope). Well, Kirby was quite intrigued by the little furry bun-buns and actually started chasing them out of the nest and around the yard, as they hopped away yipping and shrieking (I honestly didn't know rabbits made sounds like that.) Don't worry, she didn't kill any of them. I scooped her up in one arm then ran around trying to pick up as many rabbits as I could with the other arm, and put them back in the nest. They didn't want to stay there, though. I think they sensed the danger had not yet passed. So, I took Kirby inside to give them time to calm down and go back to the nest. (I later saw the mother there, but she hopped away as soon as I got remotely close to her. I know they only check on their nest once every 24 hours, so I wasn't real concerned about the babies.)
It turns out, though, that Kirby wasn't what I needed to be concerned about. Now here comes the sad part: The next day, Mom and I were at work when we got a phone call around 11:30 or so. Toby and Rob were both off that day so they were supposed to be doing yard work. Well, Toby was mowing the lawn by the deck, which was near where the nest was (I think some of you can sense what's about to unfold). One of the rabbits was nearby and got scared of the lawn mower....so it ran right under it. :( I was so depressed about it all day (still am, actually). I wondered if it was one of the ones I held the day before and tried to save from Kirby. I know there's no sense in beating myself up over it, but I still feel so, so bad. I know Toby did, too, but accident or not, it's still very sad. I'm just glad I wasn't there when it happened, because I never would've been able to get that image out of my head. I'm also taking solace in knowing that it wasn't one of my kitties, or Kirbs.
Anyway, now that I've succeeded in bumming out everyone who's still reading this by this point (I warned you not to if you're sensitive, so don't blame me for ruining your day) I'll go sign off. I rented 4 movies this weekend and they're all due back tonight so I gotta finish watching them. Adieu, children and be safe!
